I was reading an old report from my company's HR department and saw that 78% of internal promotions went to people who had a mentor. That's way higher than I thought.

Yeah, that 78% number really jumps out. It makes you wonder how many good people get passed over just because they're not in the right circle or don't know how to ask for that kind of help. Companies talk about fairness, but if most promotions need a mentor, it's more about who you know. They should probably make those programs open to everyone, not just the people who already have an in.

Totally agree about it being more about who you know. It reminds me of my old job where they had a "buddy system" for new hires. The managers just picked their favorites from day one, and those people got all the good tasks and inside advice. The rest of us were left to figure it out alone, and surprise, the favorites got promoted faster. It felt like a club you had to be invited to, not something based on skill.
