My boss laughed at me for tracking my hours with a spreadsheet

I was at a staff meeting at my construction office in Phoenix last Tuesday and my manager saw me updating my time log in Excel. He told me I was wasting my life and that real contractors use apps like Buildertrend now. Has anyone else dealt with that whole paper vs digital debate when your boss is a tech snob?

lol your boss sounds like a tool. ive been tracking hours in Google Sheets for years and it works just fine. spreadsheets are actually more flexible than most of those paid apps if you know what youre doing. no reason to get laughed at for a perfectly good system.

Agree completely. Spreadsheets let you build exactly what you need instead of fighting some app's idea of how time tracking should work. I've been using Excel for about eight years now and it handles everything from basic hour logs to invoicing without a single subscription fee. The boss laughing is probably just used to shiny interfaces and doesn't realize sheets can do conditional formatting, automatic totals, and even email reminders if you set it up right. Takes a bit of learning but once you've got a template going you never have to buy another app again.
