My old boss in Chicago said to never take a counteroffer, and he was right

I got a job offer for 15k more and my current company matched it to keep me. I stayed, but six months later they let me go anyway during a round of cuts. Felt like they just bought time to replace me. Anyone else get burned by a counteroffer like that?

Consider the hidden message a counteroffer sends. They only valued you after you had a foot out the door, which shows a reactive management style. That kind of workplace rarely changes its core problems.

My uncle in Phoenix took a counteroffer once. They moved his desk to the storage closet the next week.
