Old timers still think you need a college degree for IT work

I was at a networking event in Austin last month. This guy in his 50s kept telling me I wasted time learning Python on my own. He said real tech jobs need a 4 year degree. I tried explaining I got hired at a startup with just a portfolio and 3 certs. Has anyone else run into this outdated mindset when talking career paths?
