Sat in a 2 hour meeting in Austin before I figured out my resume was the real problem
Two years ago I applied to 87 jobs in 4 months from my apartment in Austin and got 3 callbacks total, which is a 3 percent response rate. I kept blaming the market and kept rewriting my cover letters over and over. Then a recruiter I met at a coffee shop looked at my resume for about 20 seconds and asked me why all my bullet points described what my team did instead of what I did. That was the moment it hit me. Every line started with stuff like "responsible for supporting" or "helped with" and had zero numbers in it. I had been basically writing a job description for my old company instead of selling myself. I spent one weekend rewriting 12 bullets with real numbers, like cut ticket times from 2 days to 4 hours, and I got 4 interviews in the next 3 weeks. So my question is, has anyone else had a recruiter or hiring manager point out something obvious about their resume that they totally missed?
