The critique that killed my endless email thread habit

My old manager in Austin told me after 3 missed deadlines that my 10 paragraph status updates were pure noise, so I started sending 3 bullet points max. Anyone else get blunt feedback that actually fixed a work blind spot, or was it just me being too wordy?

10 paragraphs of status updates, that is wild. I mean seriously, ten paragraphs about what you did or were going to do, that's not a status update, that's a whole novel. I would have lost my mind reading that every single day. Your manager must have had the patience of a saint to let it go on for three missed deadlines before saying something. That blunt feedback probably saved your career, honestly. The three bullet point rule works because it forces you to actually figure out what matters instead of just dumping every thought. I bet you got way more done after that, too, since you had to sum things up in your head first.
