Unpopular opinion: networking events are a waste of time

I went to 4 networking mixers in Chicago last quarter and got exactly zero real leads. The only thing that actually worked for my career was joining a small Slack group of developers in my city. We share job postings and give each other honest feedback. Has anyone else had better luck with online communities than in-person schmoozing?

Feels like the same thing" yeah that's exactly it. Reminds me of this one time I joined a online writing group for a month thinking it'd be like a book club but everybody just posted their own stuff and nobody talked about what we read. Kinda turned into a weird feedback swap meet more than anything. Ever run into a group that started off one way and ended up totally different?
