Debate: pre-drill every screw or trust the pilot point?

I keep seeing guys on sites in Denver skip pre-drilling with those self-tapping screws and swear it's fine, but I've had too many split 2x4s on door frames to trust it. Is it just me, or do the pilot point claims only hold up on softwood and fail on anything with a knot? What do you all do when you're framing fast?

Split wood on a knot is just part of the job, sounds like you're overthinking it.
