Just realized I wasted $90 on a cheap marking gauge from a big box store.
The thing slipped on every piece of oak I used it on, ruining the layout lines. What's a solid brand you guys actually trust for precision marking?

Honestly, calling it a waste is a bit much. A cheap gauge works fine if you know how to set it up. That slipping on oak probably means you didn't lock the screw down tight enough or you were pushing it at a bad angle. I've used the same basic kind for rough cuts on plywood and pine for years without a single ruined line. You just have to get a feel for the tool.

Yeah, that slipping on oak is a real pain. Gray_roberts has a point about setup, but some of those cheaper ones just don't have the grip. After my own bad experience, I switched to a basic Veritas gauge and it was a total game changer. The locking mechanism actually holds on hardwoods, no more ruined lines. It costs more, but you buy it once and it just works.
