Oak trim trick I learned the hard way

I tried using an oil based stain on some red oak baseboards last week and it came out blotchy as heck. Found out I should've used a pre stain conditioner first to seal the grain. Anybody else run into this with oak?

Blotchy oak trim isn't really the end of the world though. People act like a bad stain job is a total disaster when you can just sand it down and try again with conditioner. It's just wood, not brain surgery. I've seen guys throw away perfectly good oak because of one bad coat and that's just wasteful.

Has anyone tested whether sanding actually removes the stain fully or if it just pushes it deeper into the grain, making the second coat even blotchier? Feels like everyone assumes it's foolproof but nobody checks.
