Old timer on a job in Houston told me I was sanding against the grain on crown molding
He said to hold the paper at a 45 degree angle and follow the wood grain, not fight it, and after I tried his way on the next piece I never went back to my old method - anybody else have a simple tip like that from an older carpenter that completely changed how you work?

Listen to old timers, they've already made all the dumb mistakes so you don't have to. That whole idea of "work with the grain, not against it" applies to basically everything in life, from dealing with people to fixing stuff around the house.

Ain't that the truth. Nothing humbles you quite like realizing you could have avoided a whole mess if you'd just listened to someone who's been there before.
