Old timer told me to never use a level on baseboard, just scribe everything

I was trimming out a house in Oregon last month. This retired carpenter with 40 years saw me running base with a 6-foot level. He laughed, said levels lie on old walls, just scribe the damn board. I ignored him, ended up with a 1/4 inch gap at the floor. Tried his way on the next room, fit like a glove. Who else learned a hard lesson ignoring a pro?

Last two houses I scribed everything, never touching a level again.

Ugh, yeah, @rosed32 I hear you. I fought it for like three rooms before I gave in. The level is fine for the top edge but the floor is never actually flat, that's the whole deal. I kept chasing a straight line on a wavy slab. Once I started scribing, I stopped cussing at my own work. Honestly, it's not even slower once you get the hang of it.
