Old timer told me to never use a speed square for rafter cuts and I brushed him off for 2 years
Ngl, I winged it with a framing square on a 12/12 pitch shed roof last weekend and after ripping out 4 wrong birds mouths I finally broke down and called him to admit he was 100% right, has anyone else had a stubborn moment like that where you should have just listened sooner?

Speed squares are fine if you know how to use them right.

Watched my buddy Sam spend a whole Saturday fighting a speed square on some simple shed rafters. He kept saying the old ways were outdated and his way was faster. Called me around 4pm all defeated telling me he had to redo three rafters because his angles were off by like 2 degrees. Finally took my grandpa's advice the next morning and had the whole roof framed by lunch. Sometimes you just gotta swallow that pride and listen to the guys who have been doing it since before we were born.
