The retired cabinet maker who fixed my scribe line with one look

He took my pencil without asking, marked a line 1/8 inch off the wall, and said 'your level's lie more than your clients, kid' and now I check everything with a 6 foot ruler before I even pull out my square.

I read a piece in Fine Woodworking last year about how factory levels can be off by a 16th or worse straight out of the box, and that totally matches what you ran into. That old timer probably learned that trick in the 60s when tools were even more hit or miss, and it stuck with him forever. The scribe line thing is genius too, because it takes your eye off the bubble and puts it on the actual gap you need to fill. I've started doing the same check with a straightedge on every cabinet I hang, and honestly it's saved me from three re-do's this year alone. The sad part is most guys won't learn this until they get burned on a job, but you got it for free. That one look probably paid for itself ten times over already.
