The week my apprentice kept using my chisels to open paint cans in Denver
After the third time I found my $120 set of Narex chisels with dried latex paint and nicks in the edge, I had to sit him down and explain that tools have specific jobs, so what's a good way to get a new guy to respect the equipment without just yelling?

Oh man, "using my chisels to open paint cans" made me wince. I had a similar thing happen with a roommate and my good kitchen knives. Sitting him down was the right move. I found showing the damage and then the cost to replace it really hit home. It's not about the yelling, it's about making them see the tool as an investment. Maybe even let him use a cheap one for the messy jobs so he gets the difference?

Ugh, that's brutal. I keep a single old, beat up screwdriver right on the workbench with a piece of tape that says "PAINT CAN" on the handle. I showed the new guy the difference between that junker and a good chisel, and how much work it takes to fix a messed up edge. Letting him sharpen the nicked one himself drove the point home way better than any lecture.
