Unpopular opinion: I used to dismiss lap joints, but that neighborhood trellis changed everything

I always thought lap joints were a cheap shortcut for indoor work only. Outdoor builds need stronger joins, or so I believed. Then I noticed the new trellis at the community garden built with lap joints, and it's held up great. The guy who built it said he used exterior grade adhesive and stainless steel fasteners. After checking it out myself, I realized it's more about the execution than the joint type. Idk, maybe it's just me, but I'm adding it to my toolbox now. That local build really opened my eyes.

That hardware store plywood gets a bad rap too. I mean, I've seen some real garbage batches but also some surprisingly solid sheets once you dig past the top layer.
