Used a speed square wrong for like 5 years until a old timer set me straight

I was out on a deck job in Phoenix last month marking rafters and this retired framer watched me for a minute before he walked over and showed me I was using the pivot point all wrong for hip cuts. He had me try his way and it saved me 20 minutes of math per rafter easy. Anyone else have a basic tool they realized they were using backwards?

Nope, but an old carpenter showed me I was reading my tape measure backwards for years.

My buddy Mike used a circular saw wrong for like two years. He would push the saw forward and then pull it back to finish the cut, which burnt up blades and left rough edges. Another guy at a job site finally pointed out he was supposed to keep the saw moving forward the whole time, no pulling back. Mike said he felt like an idiot but the cuts were way smoother after that.
