Vent: Not using a level on stringer layout drives me nuts

I was helping a guy finish his basement stairs last month. He had the treads cut and everything but the risers were off by almost a quarter inch each step. I asked him if he used a level to mark the stringers. He just shrugged. I ended up redoing three stringers for him. That little bit of care saves a ton of headache later especially when you get to the top and the last step isn't the right height. Anyone else see people skip this step and regret it?

Nah, I disagree. A lot of that stuff can be fudged with proper scribing and test fitting if you know what you're doing. The level is a crutch sometimes.

@casey_lane73 A scribe block won't help you figure out if your wall is three degrees out of plumb unless you actually check it with a level first. You have to know how far off it is before you can fake it.
