Watched a finish carpenter lay out crown molding on a Saturday job site in Dallas

He took 45 minutes just to find the studs and mark the ceiling joists before cutting a single piece. I always rushed that part and ended up with gaps. Have any of you guys tried marking everything out first like that?

Marking everything out first" is exactly what I used to skip, and it bit me every time.
