I laughed at my roommate for 2 months about buttering toast before the jam, then I tried it
My roommate Kevin has buttered his toast before adding jam for like 3 years and I gave him so much grief about it, calling it a wasted step since jam is already spreadable. About 6 weeks ago he made me two slices side by side, one butter first and one jam straight on dry toast, and told me to eat them blind. The buttered one tasted way better, the jam didn't soak in and turn the bread soggy, and the salt in the butter actually cut the sweetness. I have eaten it that way every single morning since, which means I owe Kevin roughly 60 apologies. Now I need to know if anyone else does butter under peanut butter too, because he says that is the next level and I am not sure I trust him again yet.
Wait, he does butter under peanut butter too? That actually sounds like it could work the same way, keeping the bread from getting torn up when you spread cold PB. I had a buddy in college who did cream cheese under jelly and everyone gave him crap for it, but it's the same idea, you're putting up a barrier so the wet stuff doesn't wreck the bread. You probably owe Kevin more than 60 apologies at this point, just go make him breakfast once a week for a while.
