Had to eat crow about open floor plans after living in one for a year

I always thought open floor plans were overrated. Seemed like a trend that would die out. Then my wife and I moved into a loft in Austin that was basically one big room with a bathroom. Took about 4 months for me to realize I actually liked it. You can cook and still talk to people, the natural light reaches everywhere, and we use the space way more than our old cramped house. The downside is noise carries, so if someone watches TV loud you can't escape it. We solved that with a cheap room divider. Has anyone else made a similar switch on a living situation and ended up liking it after hating the idea for years?

Basically one big room with a bathroom"... that just hit me funny. I've always been the type to need my own little corners and walls, you know? But the way you describe the light and the talking while cooking... that actually sounds kind of nice. I bet it takes a minute to get used to hearing every single noise, though. A room divider feels like a smart fix... probably better than my backup plan of just yelling at people to turn stuff down.
