I thought the Grand Canyon was overhyped until I stood at Mather Point at 5am last June
I always rolled my eyes at people who called the Grand Canyon life changing. I figured it was just a big hole in the ground with a bunch of tourist traps around it. Then last June my brother dragged me there on a road trip and we got to Mather Point around 5am before sunrise. Standing there in the cold with maybe 10 other people, watching the light slowly hit those layers of rock, I finally got it. The scale is impossible to understand from photos. I sat on the rim for two hours and didn't touch my phone once. I used to think people who cried at nature were being dramatic, but I totally teared up. Now I tell everyone to skip the IMAX movie and just go sit at the rim before dawn. Has anyone else had a place completely flip their expectations like that?
