Painted my kitchen cabinet hinges and wish I had listened sooner
I spent a whole Sunday painting over the hinges on my oak cabinets instead of replacing them, thinking it would save money. Three weeks later in Portland, the paint started chipping off and the hinges were squeaking worse than before. Turns out the layers of old grease and oil meant nothing would stick, no matter how much I cleaned them first. Has anyone else tried this and had it fail, or did I just pick the wrong kind of paint?

Did you use a shellac-based primer before the paint went on? Thats usually the only thing that cuts through grease on old hinges, regular cleaning never gets it all out of the pores. I made the same mistake with a spray can one time and it peeled in like a week, but the second time I wiped them down with mineral spirits and hit em with BIN primer and it actually held up. What did you use to clean them before you painted?
