Showerthought: I thought frozen veggies were a ripoff for years, then I did the math at my local Kroger
For years I swore fresh was always better and that frozen stuff was just lazy cooking with extra cost. Last month I compared prices at the Kroger on High Street and a bag of frozen broccoli was $1.29 while fresh crowns were $2.49 and half of them were already going soft. I also read that frozen produce gets picked and frozen within hours, so the vitamins hold up better than stuff that sat on a truck for a week. Made a stir fry with the frozen kind last Tuesday and my roommate could not tell the difference. Anyone else switch sides on this, or am I late to something everyone knew already?
Did you ever buy those huge bags of frozen mixed veggies at Costco and just eat them straight for like a week? I did that in college when I was broke and honestly the stir fry blend wasn't bad at all. My mom still swears fresh is the only way but she also boils broccoli until it's gray so I don't really trust her on this one lol. The texture thing is what gets people, frozen green beans can come out a little soft if you microwave them too long.
