Taco truck in Portland made me question my $4 taco habit

I always swore by this taqueria on 82nd, three tacos for $6.50, salsa verde that could wake the dead. Then last Tuesday a friend dragged me to this little cart by the library that only does one thing, carnitas torta for $5. I laughed and ordered two out of spite. That thing was massive, sloppy, packed with crunchy bits and pickled onions. My buddy said 'you've been paying for hype, not flavor' and honestly it stung because he was right. The taqueria's good but the torta made me realize I was just stuck in a routine, not actually hunting for the best cheap eats. Now I'm trying a new cart every week and it's way more fun. Anyone else find a spot that made them rethink their usual order?

Read somewhere that food carts actually have lower overhead so they can put more into the ingredients, and that totally tracks with what you're saying. That taqueria probably pays for a storefront and a menu with too many options, so they gotta cut corners somewhere. The torta sounds like a single focused thing done right, which is honestly rare. Once you start looking at carts with one or two items on the menu, you find the real gems. I bet half the places we pass daily are hiding better food than the spots we're loyal to.
