Am I the only one who figured out the self-checkout weight trick?

I got sick of the self-checkout yelling at me every time I put my reusable bag on the scale. The sensors kept thinking I was stealing because the bag weight threw everything off. So last week I tried placing my empty bag on the scale BEFORE I scanned the first item. Then I hit the button to add bags. It zeroed out the weight and the machine shut up. I went through a 12 item order in under 4 minutes without a single error. Has anyone else found a weird checkout hack that actually works?

Oh, actually the bag weight setting is meant for when you scan your own bags at the end, not before.

Huh, is that how it really works though? I always thought you set it before you start scanning so it accounts for the bag weight in the totals. Doesn't it throw the scale off if you wait until the end?
