Chatting with my niece in line at Target about the old conveyor belts

She asked why the belt was moving and I explained cashiers used to slide everything down them, which made her say 'that sounds like a game'. Kinda miss that little bit of theater now. Anyone else get nostalgic for the mechanical parts of checking out?

Oh man, I totally forgot about that whole grocery store slide show.

That whole thing was a master class in how not to do damage control. They spent all that money on fancy slides when just fixing the leaky roof would have been cheaper. Makes you wonder who in the meeting actually thought that was a good idea. Feels like a total disconnect between the people making the slides and the people actually shopping there.

Pretty much anytime a store spends real money on something that doesn't actually help customers, you know someone way up the chain just liked the way it looked. A simple email or a note at the register telling people about a planned fix would have probably done more good than a whole slideshow nobody asked for. You gotta think from the floor up, not the office down, or you end up with a mess like this.
