Got scolded by an old cashier for not bagging my own milk at the grocery store

I was waiting in line at the Kroger on Elm Street last Wednesday, just zoning out. The cashier guy, maybe 60 years old, rings up my milk and bread, then looks at me and says, 'You gonna bag that yourself or just stare at it?' I actually didn't know some stores expect you to bag your own stuff now. Has anyone else run into this, or is it just my local store that's different?

Yeah that reminds me, I once saw a guy bag a gallon of milk sideways and it just exploded everywhere.

Oh man that exact same thing happened to me last month at a different store! I was standing there like a dummy and this older cashier lady just stared at me until I grabbed the bags. It's honestly confusing because some places have baggers and other places expect you to do it yourself with zero warning. I got so flustered I put my bread under the milk and crushed it haha. Now I always grab a bag before I even put my stuff on the belt just in case.
