I finally switched to the self-checkout lane at Publix last Tuesday

The regular line had 3 people with overflowing carts, but the self-checkout was empty. Now I zip through in under 2 minutes. Has anyone else found a hidden fast lane at their store?

Wait, is your Publix one of the nice new ones with the big self-checkout area or the older one with just two machines that always break down?

The real issue with those self-checkouts isn't the number of machines, it's that they're programmed by somebody who's never actually used one in a busy store. I swear the scanner on the older Publix model gives up halfway through scanning a bag of chips and makes you wait for a key turn. And the new ones with the big area? They're overcorrected, now the scale is too sensitive so your reusable bag sets off a "please place item in bag" loop. Honestly, the sweet spot is the middle generation with four machines that all have slightly different quirks.
