I used to think those self-checkout machines were just a way for the store to cut jobs.
But last Tuesday, I was in a huge hurry and the regular line had like 8 people, so I gave the self-checkout a shot. I scanned my six items, paid, and was out the door in under two minutes, which completely changed my mind. Has anyone else had a moment where a store convenience you avoided actually saved you?

Honestly, they still cost people jobs though.

Tell me about it, my last job got automated and now I'm a professional couch critic. The robot that took my spot probably gets better health insurance too, lmao. Saw a whole checkout line at the grocery store replaced by those self-scan stations last week. Feels like we're all just training our replacements at this point.

My uncle's old factory job got replaced by one robot that needs three people just to maintain it.
