Just had a debate with myself over self-checkout vs cashier

I was at the Target on 42nd street last night and watched a dad with two screaming kids try to scan 15 items at self-checkout. It took him forever and I felt bad for him, but I also think self-checkout is faster when you're alone. I ended up helping him bag his stuff because the machine kept yelling at him. Do you guys go to a cashier or self-checkout when you see a mess like that?
