PSA: that extended warranty on a $40 toaster was a total scam

Last month I bought a toaster at the big box store on Route 9 and the cashier pushed the 3 year warranty for an extra $12. I figured why not, toast is serious business. Got home, used it twice, and the lever snapped off on the third morning. Called the warranty line and they said the part takes 6 weeks to ship, plus a $15 handling fee. So I paid $52 to toast two bagels and I'm back to using the oven broiler. Anyone else fall for those add-on warranties on cheap stuff?

Got burned the same way on a cheap rice cooker, paid $8 extra for the warranty and the heating plate died in a month. They wanted me to mail the whole thing back at my own cost, which was basically the price of a new one. Learned my lesson, now I skip those add-ons unless it's something actually expensive.
