Showerthought: The guy in front of me at the grocery store had a full cart of just bananas
I was stuck in line behind this guy at the Safeway on 4th Street yesterday, and his cart was packed with nothing but bananas. I mean, it had to be at least 200 bananas. The cashier looked just as confused as I was. I started making up stories in my head about why he needed so many. Is he opening a smoothie stand? Is he trying to break a world record? Maybe he's just really, really into banana bread. It made the wait go by faster, but I still wonder what the real story was. Has anyone else seen someone buying a weirdly huge amount of one single thing?

Okay that reminds me of the time I saw a lady buying like fifty cans of pumpkin puree. It was November, so maybe she was the designated pie maker for her whole family. What I do when I see stuff like that is just ask. Once I was behind a guy with a cart full of duct tape and I just said "big project?" and he told me he was building a Halloween costume. It's usually a pretty normal reason.

Ever ask someone with a cart full of toilet paper if they're planning for the apocalypse or just have a really bad stomach bug? The answers are never as fun as you hope.

Yeah, I like what averywright said about just asking. I'm too shy to do it, but I love that it works. My brain goes wild with the stories too. Like, I once saw a guy buy ten big things of salt. Just salt. My first thought was he was melting ice, but it was July. Maybe he was curing meat or had a huge water softener. The real answer is probably boring, but the guessing game is the best part of the trip.
