That older cashier at Kroger who asked if I was okay really stuck with me
She noticed I looked stressed about a $40 overcharge on my receipt and took five minutes to fix it while the line grew behind me. Has anyone else had a random act of kindness from a store employee that still pops into your head years later?

Honestly, I once cried over a free coffee refill so yeah, I get it.

and it wasn't even like a big fancy coffee place, just a diner with a bottomless cup of the weakest coffee you've ever had. but that day i was so broke and so tired and honestly feeling really lonely, and the waitress just kept coming over with the pot and smiling at me. something about that small kindness just broke the dam, you know? i sat there with my watery coffee trying to hide that i was tearing up over a forty cent refill lol. it's never really about the coffee or the price tag, it's about feeling seen when you're in that weird emotional state. glad i'm not the only one who's had that moment.
