That older nurse told me to drop the hero complex my first week on nights
She said 'you can't save everyone and trying to will burn you out by March.' I was 22 and thought she was being cynical. Three years later I ended up crying in the break room after coding a guy for 45 minutes. She was right, I still think about that advice every time I'm waiting in line at the pharmacy after my shift grabbing energy drinks.
