Unpopular opinion: self-checkout lines are actually slower than cashier lanes now

I stood in the self-checkout line at the Target on Elm Street for 12 minutes last night. Three registers were down and the one person watching had to help four different people with produce codes. Meanwhile the regular lane with a cashier moved through six carts in the same time. Has anyone else noticed this shift where the machines are just making things worse?

Man, it's not that deep. Just bag your own stuff and move on.

have you tried using the scan-as-you-go handheld thingies some stores have? at walmart near me, you grab a scanner when you walk in, scan stuff as you shop, then just pay at a dedicated kiosk in like 30 seconds. cuts out the whole waiting-in-line-for-a-machine drama. it's not perfect but it's honestly way faster than dealing with busted self-checkouts or chatty cashiers lol
