Vent: Everyone complains about self-checkout but I saw something at Target that changed my mind

I was at the Target on 4th street last Tuesday waiting in the self-checkout line, which had like 8 people in it. The regular lane next to me had a cashier just standing there with zero customers, so I walked over and got out in 2 minutes flat. People keep saying self-checkout is faster, but I think it only seems that way because you're busy scanning your own stuff and not paying attention to how many machines are broken or backing up. The cashier lane was literally empty and I felt like I was cheating the system or something. Has anyone else noticed their local stores have way more self-checkouts than needed while real cashiers sit idle?

Its the same thing at the grocery store near my house. They got six self-checkouts and two cashier lanes and half the time only one cashier is working while three self-checkouts are flashing red with errors. Stores are clearly trying to push everyone to the machines so they can cut staff hours. Its funny how they call it "self-checkout" like youre doing them a favor when really youre just doing their job for free while they save money on payroll.

Makes me think about how you don't get your own paper menu with a barcode scanner at a restaurant so you can order and bus your own table while still paying full price. They're basically turning customers into unpaid employees everywhere you look now.
