Just dodged a huge mess by switching to a digital probe for my oven's temp check

My old analog dial was off by almost 50 degrees, which explains why my pastries in Portland kept failing. Anyone else have a go-to method for calibrating their equipment at home?

My old oven's thermostat is so bad I just leave a cheap analog thermometer inside all the time.

Okay, but "need a food science degree" feels like a stretch, @robert_roberts. Most ovens are off by like 25 degrees, it's not that wild. You just learn where to set the dial for your particular box. The thermometer is a good check, but calling it a lifesaver is a bit much. It's just an oven being an oven.

That's the real pro move right there, @anderson.jason. My last apartment oven was the same way, it had more mood swings than a reality TV star. You basically need a food science degree just to bake a frozen pizza correctly. Honestly, those little analog thermometers are lifesavers for keeping dinner from turning into a charcoal briquette.
