Spent 4 hours chasing a fish smell in my walk-in that turned out to be one thing
Last Tuesday the whole walk-in smelled like old trout and I tore the thing apart looking for it. I pulled every sheet pan, wiped the compressor coils, poured bleach down the drain twice, and even had my prep cook check the seals with a flashlight. Around hour four I got down on my knees and saw a single shrimp stuck behind the gasket of the door hinge, just rotting away back there. Have any of you found a mystery odor hiding somewhere you never thought to look?
Four hours for one shrimp seems like a lot but I get it, that smell takes over everything and you can't think straight until it's gone. Honestly though, a single rotting shrimp behind a door gasket is pretty low on the list of gross things that could be hiding in a walk-in. I'd be more worried about what's growing in the drain line or inside the fan housing where nobody ever looks. Count yourself lucky it was just the shrimp and not something dead in the walls.
