TIL my knife block was a lie

Spent my Saturday redoing a whole drawer with a knife rack insert. I had this big block on the counter for years, but honestly, half the slots held knives I never touched. So I pulled everything out, sorted them by what I actually use every day, and got a thin drawer organizer. Now my go-to chef's knife, petty knife, and paring knife are right there, no digging. The weird serrated bread knife I use twice a year is in the back. It sounds small, but my flow in the morning is so much faster. Why do we keep tools we don't need in the prime spot?

Having all those knives out in the block means they're ready for any task, even the rare ones. That bread knife is a lifesaver when you finally need it, and digging through a drawer for it is a pain. A full block also looks complete and professional on the counter, not like you're missing pieces. Sometimes having the right specialized tool, even if it's not daily, is worth the prime real estate.

But all that counter space taken up by knives you barely use seems like a waste. That bread knife might come in handy once a month, but it's just sitting there collecting dust. A drawer insert keeps things easy to find without the clutter. Plus, a simple setup looks cleaner and more planned out.
