18 years of sweeping and I just learned I was capping the flue wrong

The old timer who trained me in 2006 always said to cap from the inside out, so that's what I've done ever since. Last week a homeowner in Dayton pulled up a photo from their roof and showed me my marks on the crown, all chipped up on the outer edge. Turns out the proper way is to work from the outside lip inward so the seal sits flush with the liner, and I've been fighting moisture and draft issues for almost two decades without knowing it. The client's sister is a CSIA-certified inspector and she spotted it in 20 seconds flat during a routine check. I felt like a total hack, but at least now I can fix it for the other 40 chimneys I've done the same way. Has anyone else had one of those moments where a basic habit turned out to be backwards the whole time?
