Almost lost a customer's house to a hidden creosote dam - watch out for these
I was up in Albany last Tuesday on a routine sweep for a lady in a 1950s colonial. Got to the second flue and found a massive creosote dam right above the smoke chamber, must have been 3 inches thick. If I hadn't caught it, that thing could have sparked a chimney fire on the next burn. She said she hadn't had it swept in 5 years because the last guy told her it looked clean. Anyone else run into these hidden dams in older homes?

Found one exactly like that last month in a 1960s ranch, scary how fast they build up.
