Cold mornings meant hot chili from the truck's tailgate

I've been sweeping chimneys since the 90s, and back then, our crew had a Friday ritual. Someone would always cook a big pot of chili to bring along. We'd eat it straight from the tailgate of the truck, bowls steaming in the cold. We talked about tricky flues and funny customers while we ate. Now, everyone just brings their own lunch or hits a drive-thru. The shared meal is gone, and so is that bit of team spirit. I think about those chili days whenever I'm eating alone in my cab.

Wait, you guys actually ate chili from the tailgate? That sounds like a mess waiting to happen lol. I can't imagine keeping it from spilling everywhere. Still, it's a shame that kind of thing is gone now.

What are you eating, just a sad sandwich off the truck bumper?

Our crew's tailgate chili has a special Coleman stove just for it.
