Cracked flue liner in an old brick house took me 3 days to spot

Found the smoke smell was coming from a hairline crack hidden behind a mortar joint in a 1920s place outside Akron, not the chimney cap like I thought. Took me 3 days of pulling my hair out before I ran a camera down and saw it. Anyone else ever wasted that long on a liner issue that was staring right at you?

Honestly sounds like you got off easy, a hairline crack behind a mortar joint in a 1920s house is about as sneaky as it gets, and 3 days beats the weeks some folks burn on far worse. You sure it's not just the old damp-wood smell that always lingers in those places, though?
