Found a bird nest sitting right on top of a damper in Portland, had to tell the homeowner the hard truth
Honestly, last Tuesday I got called out to a house in Portland that hadn't had a sweep in about 6 years, and when I popped the damper open there was a starling nest packed tight right on top of it. The homeowner swore they never heard a thing, but I showed them the twigs and the droppings through my scope camera and they went quiet. I pulled the nest out in two big chunks and ran my rods up after it, and the creosote up there was thick enough that I'm glad nobody lit a fire this winter. Tbh I've seen nests before but never one that low in the flue, so now I'm wondering if I should be checking the damper area first on any house that sat empty for a while. Has anyone else run into a nest sitting that close to the top of the firebox?
