Got roasted by a old timer at a job site in Nashville last spring

I was running a new liner on a 150 year old chimney and he watched me skip the slip joint on the first section. Ever had a customer's neighbor call you out on something you knew better than to skip?

I read that old masonry structures can move up to a quarter inch per year.

That "old timer" probably saved you a headache down the road. I get called out by random folks all the time and it stings, but honestly the ones who caught me skipping steps are the reason I still have a license. What gets me is how many people will defend skipping the little things because "nobody will notice." But that old timer noticed, and so will the next guy. Those slip joints exist for a reason, especially on old brickwork that shifts with the seasons.
