Had a stubborn creosote blockage in a 1920s flue in Portland last week

I tried a standard brush first, but switching to a rotary whip system cleared it in under an hour. Which method do you all trust more for those really tough jobs?

Rotary whip for the win, the brush just can't compete on old, caked-up stuff.

Does the whip ever damage the older clay liners though @janac51?

That rotary whip is the only thing that gets through the really baked-on layers. Had a similar mess in an old Seattle chimney last fall. The brush just smoothed the surface, but the whip chewed right through it. For anything that's been building up for decades, the extra power makes all the difference.
