Had to choose between a squirrel in the flue or a very angry raccoon in the damper

Went for the raccoon, and let's just say my leather gloves now have some new ventilation holes. Anyone ever try using a live trap for something like this, or is a long pole and a prayer still the move?

You really think a live trap is the safer bet? I've had a raccoon tear its way out of a wire cage before, bending the bars and making a huge mess. Sometimes you need to deal with the immediate threat head on, even if it gets rough. A long pole can guide them out a window or door if you're smart about it. Isn't it better to control the chaos than hope they go into a box?

Gotta disagree with morgan512 on this one... picking the angry one first just gets you a torn up glove. A live trap with some cat food is way less exciting, but you keep all your fingers.

Always choose the angry one first.
