I swore by wire brushes for 12 years, then a sweep in Pittsburgh handed me a poly brush and I felt dumb
Ran both on the same sooted-up flue last Tuesday and the poly pulled twice the creosote with half the scraping, so now I want to know what else I've been doing the hard way out of habit.
Twice the creosote sounds like a stretch unless the wire brush was already worn down. A stiff poly can hit the corners better but it won't chew through glazed tar the way steel does, and you just moved from a 12 year old brush to a brand new one. Try a fresh wire brush on that same flue and see if the gap holds up.
