Old lady in Canton made me rethink my whole brush routine
Last spring I was doing a routine cleaning for this sweet older lady, must have been 80 plus. She watched me work for a solid ten minutes before she said "young man, are you sure that wire brush is the right call for my flue?" I laughed it off, told her it's what I've always used. Then she pulled out a photo of her father's chimney sweep kit from the 1940s, all brass and horsehair brushes. She explained how those softer brushes let the flue tiles flex and breathe without scoring them. I checked her liner after I was done and sure enough, there were fine scratches I'd been leaving on other jobs for years. Switched to a poly brush with nylon bristles the next week. Has anyone else run into customers who knew the trade better than they let on? What did they teach you?
